United Nations adopts ILD Thesis
for the Legal Empowerment of the Poor and the Erradication of Povery

New York, December 4th 2008.- The 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations approved a resolution by which it adopts the proposals of the report of the Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor, co-chaired by former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright and ILD President Hernando de Soto, as part of the strategy to eradicate world poverty. The commission’s report entitled Making the Law Work for Everyone, shall be further discussed and analyzed in the 64th General Assembly of the United Nations.
The report gathers the main thesis of the ILD regarding the importance of property and business rights in the eradication of poverty, which reportedly affects over 4 billion people around the globe. This renewed commitment in the fight against poverty comes in a moment when the world is facing perhaps its worst financial crisis in recent history.
The resolution recognizes the contributions of the Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor, and situates its final report amidst such important declarations as the United Nations Millennium Declaration, the Monterrey Consensus of the International Conference on Financing for Development and the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
